Prop Gun Rental for Film Shoots: What They Are and How to Source Them
When an action scene goes wrong, the audience notices before anyone on set does. The weight of the gun looks wrong, the actor's hand does not move at all when the shot goes off, or a scene set in the early nineties features a pistol that did not exist yet. The shot is technically clean, the lighting works, the cut works, and it still does not convince anyone.
That is why prop weapons stop being a simple props question. Finding the right piece is half the job. The other half is knowing how that piece has to behave in front of a camera.
What is a prop gun, and what types are there?
Prop gun is the umbrella term for the stand-in firearms used on set instead of live weapons. They are not interchangeable, and the difference between them is entirely practical: each one exists for a different kind of shot.

The most commonly misunderstood part of this: a scene never has just one gun. The same pistol usually exists on set in two versions, sometimes three. The actor runs down the corridor holding a rubber one, switches to a metal replica for the close up where they kick the door in, and a blank firing weapon is used for the single frame where the shot is fired. In the edit all three read as one weapon. That split is made for safety and image quality, not to save money.
Which type for which shot?
The decision comes down to three questions: how close is the camera, how much will the weapon move, and is a shot fired.
If the camera is far away the type barely matters. In a wide shot a resin cast does the job and nobody can tell the difference. Spending budget here makes no sense.
If the weapon moves hard rubber is mandatory. If it drops out of the actor's hand, gets snatched away by someone else, or hits the ground, a metal piece will injure the actor and damage the floor. Rubber replicas exist precisely for this.
If the camera is close things change. In a close up the audience sees the surface, the screws, the wear. The actor needs a replica with real metal weight in their hand, because weight affects performance and not just the image. Someone holding 200 grams of plastic cannot behave like someone holding 900 grams of steel. The line of the arm, the tension in the shoulder, the way the wrist reacts when the weapon is picked up off a table, all of it changes.
If a shot is fired that is where the real decision sits. There are two routes. With a blank firing weapon you capture the muzzle flash, the sound and the recoil in camera, and the actor's body reacts naturally. Without one, the flash and the ejected casing are added later in post, but the actor's reaction in that moment cannot be added later. A muzzle flash composited over an arm that never moved reads as a lie. This is why most productions accept the extra work of a blank firing weapon for a single shot and finish the rest with effects.

The mistakes that show on screen
What breaks a scene is rarely a big error. It is the small, repeated details nobody notices on set and everybody notices on screen. These are the most common.
Wrong weight. If the piece in the actor's hand is light you can tell from the way they carry it. The arm does not strain lifting it off a table, the hand does not settle while aiming, the arm does not slow on the way down. The audience cannot name the detail, but the scene feels like it is missing something.
Missing or exaggerated recoil. An arm that does not move under a composited muzzle flash wastes the most expensive visual effect you can buy. The reverse is true as well: an actor firing a small calibre pistol whose arm flies toward the ceiling reads as comedy.
Period mismatch. A model appearing in a story set in a year before that model existed. Productions that are meticulous about wardrobe and vehicles still get this wrong regularly, because the weapon tends to be sourced at the last minute on a whatever is available basis.
Mechanical errors. A pistol that fires without the slide ever being racked, a weapon that keeps working after a magazine is dropped and never replaced, twenty rounds out of an eight round magazine. Cinema has turned these into accepted jokes, but in a production aiming for realism they break the tone.
Behaviour that does not match the character. A character with a military or police background keeping their finger on the trigger throughout, or a character with no training handling the weapon like a professional. Both tell the audience something false about who this person is, and both usually happen by accident.
Anachronistic grip and stance. The way people hold weapons has changed over the decades. The modern two handed stance that looks natural today reads as wrong in a scene set in the seventies.
What these have in common is that none of them can be fixed after the shoot. You try to cut around it, and you usually end up sacrificing the best piece of acting in the scene. Which is why weapons belong in the conversation at script stage, not on the day.

Renting prop weapons is not like renting a camera or a light. It is not a process where you pick a model from a catalogue and place an order, because the right choice cannot be made without reading the script. Until you know who the character is, what year the story is set in, whether a shot is fired, and how close the camera gets, you do not know which type you need.

- Type and model recommendation. Options appropriate to the character, the period and the shot type. If one scene needs more than one version of the same weapon, that is planned from the start.
- Actor preparation. Grip, lifting, aiming, magazine changes and behaviour matched to the character's training level are worked through before the shoot. Most of what looks unintentionally funny on screen is prevented right here.
- On set presence. The person responsible for weapons stays on set through the shoot, manages the safety flow, and collects the weapons between setups.
- Permit support. The production is briefed on how scenes with weapons should be declared in the permit file.
What drives cost and schedule
A fixed price list would be misleading, because what drives the cost is not the weapon itself but the complexity of the scene. In practice four items decide it:
- How many different weapons. There is a real difference between one pistol and a three way shootout.
- How many shots are fired. Every setup using a blank firing weapon means extra preparation, extra safety distance and extra time.
- How many days on set. The armorer stays for the duration of the shoot, so this is a line item across the project, not a single day.
- Period accuracy. If the story has to be faithful to a specific year, finding the right model can take time, which makes it something to raise early.
The general rule: the earlier a scene with weapons goes into the schedule, the cheaper and the better it turns out. A request in the final week to also shoot a gun in that one scene puts pressure on both the budget and the scene itself.
